When to Go for the Big Shot vs. the Safe Bet

Darts strategy, my friend, often involves a crucial decision: do you chase that high-risk, high-reward "big shot" (like a Triple 20\) or play the "safe bet" (aiming for a single to leave a preferred double)? As your coach, I'll tell you: the answer depends on your score, your opponent's position, and your confidence in that moment.

If you're well ahead, and your opponent is a long way off, a safe bet often makes sense. For instance, if you're on 100 and they're on 200, hitting S20 to leave 80 (T20, D10) might be safer than risking a wide throw on T20 that could land in the 1 or 5\. You want to set yourself up for a comfortable double.

However, if your opponent is on a checkout, or getting very close, a big shot might be necessary to put them under pressure or finish before they do. If you're on 100 and they're on 32, you probably need to go for the T20, S20, D20 route. It's a calculated risk. Similarly, if your confidence is high and you're consistently hitting your triples, taking the big shot can speed up your scoring. Always weigh the potential reward against the risk of leaving an awkward number or busting.
