As your buddy, I want you to adopt this crucial mindset: the "One Dart at a Time" philosophy. This means treating each individual throw as its own event, completely separate from what happened before (good or bad) and what might happen next. This intense focus on the present moment is essential for true consistency.
When you step to the oche, all your mental energy should be on the single dart you're about to throw. Don't think about the 180 you just hit (that can lead to getting too comfortable) or the double you just missed (that can lead to frustration). Don't think about the match score or what your opponent is doing. All that matters is your grip, your aim, your throw, and your target for this one dart.
After the dart is thrown, immediately hit that mental reset button before preparing for the next one. This segmented approach prevents one bad dart from ruining a whole turn, or one bad turn from ruining a whole leg. By focusing only on the task at hand, you free your mind from distracting thoughts and let your trained mechanics do their work.
