The Checkout Ladder: Mastering High Outs

While getting good at small checkouts is essential, my friend, mastering high outs (like 170, 167, 164\) is a true sign of an advanced player. As your coach, I recommend the Checkout Ladder – a systematic drill designed to help you conquer these challenging finishes, moving you up the scoring board step by step.

Start with a manageable high out, say 100 points. Practice hitting it consistently (e.g., T20, S20, D20). Once you feel confident, move to 101, then 102, and so on, gradually working your way up. For each number, figure out the best three-dart combination. For example, 170 is T20, T20, Bullseye; 167 is T20, T19, Bullseye.

If you find yourself struggling with a particular checkout (like 132), spend extra time on it before continuing up the ladder. You can also try reversing the ladder, starting from 170 and working your way down. This systematic approach not only forces you to memorize combinations but also trains your accuracy on various triple segments needed for these high finishes, giving you a comprehensive understanding of checkout strategy for any score.
