Setting up your own dedicated home darts area, my friend, allows for consistent practice and enjoyment. But, as your coach, I want to emphasize: it's super important to get the measurements exact and think about safety to create a fair and secure playing environment.
The official height of the bullseye from the floor is 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm). Use a tape measure to make sure you're spot on. The throwing distance, or oche, is measured from the face of the dartboard. For steel-tip darts, this distance is 7 feet 9 ¼ inches (237 cm). Make sure you mark this line clearly on your floor.
Safety is crucial! Always install a surround or cabinet around your dartboard to protect your wall from any stray darts – they can cause serious damage! Make sure there's plenty of clear space behind you and around the board, free of obstacles or anything breakable. Good lighting (as we discussed) is also a safety factor, preventing misthrows due to poor visibility. If you have kids or pets around, always make sure they're clear of the throwing area. A well-measured and safe home setup provides the perfect foundation for serious practice and fun!
