Winning at '501', my friend, isn't only about hitting maximum 180s; consistent scoring and smart finishing are just as, if not more, important. As your buddy, I know many players focus too much on triples and miss the crucial tactical elements that actually lead to victory.
First, aim for consistent scoring in the T20, T19, T18 areas. Even if you're hitting 60s and 80s instead of 100+, those scores add up quickly. Your main goal is to efficiently reduce your score.
Second, master your setups. As you get into the checkout zone (usually below 170), think about what numbers will leave you on a comfortable double. If you're on 100, hitting S20 leaves 80, which sets you up for T20 (60) and D10 (20). Don't accidentally bust yourself by trying for an unnecessarily high score that leaves you on an odd, unfinishable number.
Third, practice your doubles relentlessly. Even if your scoring is off, a strong double game can snatch victory. The player who hits their doubles first often wins. Focus on hitting the single you need to get to a double you can hit. Winning 501 is about consistency, smart strategy, and reliable finishing, not just flashy throws.
