Dealing with the 'Bust': Recovering from an Overthrow

The "bust", my friend, is a common and super frustrating thing in '01 games: it's when you throw too many points on a checkout, reducing your score to zero or below, and effectively losing your turn. As your buddy, I'll teach you: learning to deal with the bust is a crucial part of game management and mental resilience.

First, understand the rules: if you bust, your score goes back to what it was before that turn. So you haven't lost the leg, just a turn! Don't panic. The key is to quickly reset mentally. Acknowledge the mistake, take a deep breath, and immediately shift your focus to your opponent's turn and your next opportunity.

When planning your checkout, always think about the worst-case scenario for your first or second dart. If hitting a T20 on 60 would bust you if you miss into the 1, consider aiming for an S20 to leave D20, or another combination. Play the percentages based on your own accuracy. If you do bust, use your opponent's turn to calmly re-plan your next three darts, making sure you leave yourself on a sensible, finishable number without risking another bust. Mistakes happen; recovering from them is what separates good players from great ones.
