Blocking Out Negative Thoughts: Active Dismissal

Negative thoughts, my friend – like "I can't hit this double," "I'm playing terribly," or "I'm going to lose" – are really damaging to your game. As your coach, I'll teach you: learning to actively block out negative thoughts is a vital mental skill. It's not about ignoring them entirely, but about recognizing them and then dismissing them.

When a negative thought pops into your head, acknowledge it quickly, then mentally say "STOP!" or "CANCEL!" Imagine physically pushing that thought away. Then, immediately replace it with a positive affirmation or a focus on a technical cue. For example, if "I always miss D16" comes up, instantly counter it with "I'm focusing on my follow-through for D16 right now."

This takes conscious effort and practice. The more you interrupt those negative thought patterns, the weaker their hold becomes. Over time, your brain learns not to entertain them. This active dismissal technique prevents harmful self-talk from taking root, helping you maintain that positive and confident mindset that's essential for consistent play.
