Adapting to Different Board Conditions

While all dartboards are pretty much the same in size, my friend, the environment and how worn the board is can create different playing conditions that require you to subtly adapt. As your coach, I'll advise you: ignoring these factors can lead to unexpected misses and a lot of frustration.

A new board usually feels tighter, and your darts will stick firmly with fewer bounce-outs. As boards get older, the sisal fibers loosen up, leading to "soft" spots where darts might not stick as well, or areas with more wear (especially around T20 and the bullseye) that might affect how your darts land. Pay attention to how your darts are sticking. If they're frequently bouncing out from a specific area, try adjusting your throwing force or aim slightly.

Temperature and humidity can also affect how your darts fly, especially if you have plastic flights that might warp a bit. A cold room might make your initial throws feel stiff. Similarly, a board that's been exposed to dampness might feel softer. Take a few practice throws to get a "feel" for the board before a match. Learn to make those subtle adjustments to your throwing force, angle, or even grip pressure based on how your darts are behaving in that specific environment. Adapting to conditions is a true mark of an experienced player.
